Stop Controlling the Food You Eat So You Can Be Free to Choose What You Really Need

Image
Restriction and deprivation around food is such a catch 22. We think we are doing the right thing by giving our body healthy food in limited amounts. However what it actually does is make us feel hungry and deprived, which leads to craving, which ultimately leads to bingeing. When we restrict ourselves it actually has the opposite effect we want, as we crave what we're "not allowed" and eventually binge on it. I did this for 20 years, trying every diet known to man only to lose weight initially and quite quickly, but putting it back on again as soon as I stopped the diet. Eventually it got so bad that I was bingeing every night and over exercising every day to ensure I didn't put the weight on. (Although I could never keep up and my weight kept going up). Eventually I was diagnosed with Depression and bulimia and shown how to eat naturally (mindfully). One of the keys to eating naturally is to eat exactly what you want. When you know you are "allowed" anyt...

The Hardest Thousand Words I Have Ever Written

Image
This is really hard for me to write. It is a complete departure from what I usually write, and it's bearing my true self more than I have ever before, so please be kind and bear with me as I write these really hard 1000 words. A little over a year ago I was on the road in Dallas working with The Marvel Experience. It was also my mom and her twin's 70th birthday, so there was a big party, but then again when you have a party with my family, it's never really a small affair. My mom has three sisters, and they all came with their children and grandchildren which totaled roughly 18 people and then there was my family which totaled 25 people. So there were approximately 50 aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, and cousins running around my cousins house. It was great fun and your typical loud Italian party with actual dancing on the tables. However, there was one thing that bothered me, I was always the "fat" cousin, and I hated it more than anything. It always messed wit...

Stop Trying to Control How You Eat and Take Charge Instead

Image
Taking charge of how you eat allows you to make the choices that are right for you. Being in control has negative connotations and sometimes may mean forcing yourself to do something you don't necessarily want to do. Being in control means using willpower and determination even if that choice isn't right for you. Being in charge means being mindful of what your body needs in any given situation and making the choice based on what is right for you at the time. It allows you to totally tune into your body's needs and not be affected by outside influences. Making choices because that's what you need not what you should do or have. Accordingly, tuning in to your body's natural instincts by eating naturally is sustainable long term. When you learn to love and trust yourself you choose healthy options more often as you feel more vibrant, have more energy and love being fit and healthy. When you are in charge sometimes the right choice for you at the time might be overe...

Don't Settle for Negative Results With Food, Change Your Mind About It

Image
This month I have had interactions with two people who were settling for their current situation regarding food and their bodies. The first person told me that, "She knew she would always be overweight". The second one informed me that "She will always be bulimic and she would just have to find ways to control it". One of the main reasons both these people were in these situations is because they truly believed there was no way out. This is completely understandable when we continually have experiences in our lives that substantiate this type of thinking. Or we have been told by others that we can't change, so we don't. However if we keep thinking like this then absolutely we will be stuck where we are because we won't be open for an alternative as we feel it is hopeless. The first person is now working with me through my Natural Eating course and she is beginning to change her mindset as now she is starting to have positive experiences that are provin...

How to Cope With Relapses in Anorexia Recovery

Image
As anyone who has suffered from an eating disorder will know only too well, recovery is not a straight line and there will likely be times of relapse. However, it is important to understand that just because a person relapses, it does not necessarily mean they will start back at square one. Coping with Relapses in Anorexia Recovery The most important aspect of coping with relapses is to have at least one person with whom you can remain completely honest. This is because anorexia thrives on dishonesty and you can very quickly end up convincing yourself that you are fine, despite this most definitely not being the case. We all need someone to challenge us, whether we have been in recovery for weeks, months or years. Identifying Relapse Triggers In order to get better from a relapse, you do not need to know what triggered the relapse, you only need to recommit to returning to your meal plan and accept any treatment you can find. However , it can be very useful to know why a relapse ...

Health Eating Habits - Do You Seek Comfort in Food?

Image
At times we eat for the right reasons. When we are hungry is the first example that comes to mind. As simple as it sounds, you may be surprised by how often people eat when they think they are hungry when it is a craving instead. Since we are naturally inclined to make mistakes, there are also times where we eat for the wrong reasons. An extreme craving is worth noting. More importantly, the most anxious moments are when we eat out of boredom or worse; when we seek comfort in food. We have all been there, so you are not alone. But if you are still guilty of doing this from time to time, it is time to make some changes. Emotional eating is not healthy. It is dangerous. You begin to lose control the moment you start. Predictably, those who eat for emotional reasons also tend to develop health problems. Type 2 diabetes and obesity are two common consequences of emotional eating since it often leads to weight gain and high blood sugar readings. If you seek comfort in food, it is time...

Orthorexia - Are You Obsessed With Healthy Eating?

Image
A few months ago I took an online course at Be Nourished, about Body Trust. It hugely impacted my thinking about my body, weight, diet, exercise. I had put on quite a bit of weight in my early 40s and no matter what I did, nothing would budge it. But in the process I learned a lot about nutrition and exercise. I had a lot of shame about my weight and the way I looked, and it really impacted my ability to be in the world and being seen. My thoughts in the day were taken up with exercise, and walking as many steps as I could. I had a fitbit and the fit bit scales, and I was constantly thinking about food, exercise and how to reduce my weight. I hated looking in the mirror, and I felt as if I wasn't doing enough to get my weight down. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in 2016, and I had to go for 6 week blood tests for my thyroid and liver. Two of the tests for my liver showed my enzymes were elevated. When I participated in the Body Trust course, I came to see how my relationshi...

Eating Disorders - How to Stop Binge Eating at Night

Image
Obesity is a complex epidemic Weight gain and obesity have been described as a complex epidemiological problem in the United States. Previous research has found a link between poor diets, gaining weight, high body fat, and late-day eating as a factor in gaining weight; however, the effect of each person's biological clock, regardless of the time of eating during the day, has not yet been discovered. Relationship between weight and timing of eating In a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) on September 6, 2017, researchers at BWH studied the relationship between body fat, body mass index and timing of eating for the day and the body's biological clock. This is the first time to examine the timing of meals and its relationship to the beginning of the secretion of melatonin, which is the beginning of sleep. "We found that the timing of eating and its relationship to the beginning of the secretion of melatonin, which is a sign of the b...

Why Say You're Fine When You're Not!

Image
Many of us enjoy exchanging pleasantries as we pass each other whilst taking our walk in the countryside, or nod and share a few friendly words in a familiar work or social setting. There's often a smile as we ask, 'hello, how are you?', which is often unthinkingly followed by the usual, 'I'm fine thanks, how are you?' There'd be surprise if there was any other response to the non-question that's been asked. It's a polite greeting, which sometimes doesn't even warrant waiting for the reply before we continue on our way. But what happens when we say we're fine when we're not? We're regularly advised to talk about our feelings, reminded of the importance of sharing with others when we're down, of letting them help. But how do we do that? - Context is important when we're asked how we are. Did the question consist of a quick nod of recognition or was there a more concerned degree of interest being shown? What else were you both ...
